I always hear from people that bowling is not a sport in their opinion because it isn't physical or highly cardiovascular. Another thing that I hear is that they believe it's easy to be good at bowling because throwing a ball at some pins is nothing like football or golf when comparing the level of difficulty. I have attempted to teach and tell people about bowling and how it is a sport. The main reason why people don't understand why bowling is a sport is that their perception of what occurs while bowling is skewed because there is more to just throwing a ball down a lane and trying to hit pins. There are a couple things that people people don't realize that inside a bowling ball there is a shaped core or weight block that will increase the hook or rotation of a ball, the liquid or oil on the lane that is placed on the lane, and then realizing that it breaks downs which causes the bowler to adjust so they can the most margin for error. The style of a bowler is important because it's one of the larger differences between the amateurs and the skilled bowlers. The style is important because if the timing of the approach is off the bowling ball won't react how the person wants it to but on the flip-side if the timing is aligned the bowler is able to do what they would like to do with their ball. Golf is very similar to bowling by how the fundamentals can be slightly varied but the main key to both of these sports is that the ability to transfer energy efficiently and effectively because the swing of a golf club can be perceived as a great swing but in reality the golfer could have forced it meaning the energy was falsified and causing the ball the ball to go short of the target. The same thing occurs in bowling if one forces the throw while bowling the bowler usually misses the target usually the target is missed to the right for right handers and the opposite for the left handers. The golf course is similar to the lane in bowling by the oil pattern is similar to the water hazards, and sand traps by how these areas are similar to the no go zones on a lane for the oil pattern that was placed because if a bowler throws in the no go zone their ball either won't hook or it misses the desired target. The wind in golf is similar to the oil depletion on the lanes that as the wind changes the golfer must predict how and where to hit the ball to the hole, but in bowling the bowler has to analyze what each shot did because the location of the ball entering the pins and how the pins fell can tell the bowler what to do. An example of this is that when a bowler throws their ball and it doesn't hook they must adjust to to better, or when the bowling ball hits the pins but leaves the ten pin or far right back pin off a good shot. When a bowler leaves the ten pin the most likely reason for leaving the pin is that the ball entered the pocket the head pin and the pin to the right of it for right handers and the opposite goes for the seven pin and the left handers, under the head pin this causes the three pin to hit the six pin on the back side which makes the pin go around the ten pin and this is what causes it to be standing. A difference between bowling and golf is the cash amount given to the winner in golf the winner can win up to a couple hundred thousand and in bowing the most given out in a tournament is around ten thousand for a normal tournament and for a major the average amount is fifty thousand. Bowling is very cardiovascular especially when a professional bowler must bowl approximately thirty games just to get to the finals, and if a bowler is an amateur they would have to bowl seventy or more games.
Jerome I used to be one of those non-believers, but after doing that ethnography my thinking changed. I actually got really into it because the scores got really close and some of my friends were involved, and it led to me joining the cheering section and, well, cheering. Plus there is a lot of science behind bowling which also peeks my interest in it not only as a science but as a sport overall. SO, I would definitely say that bowling is a sport. But, although I am not a fan of golf whatsoever I would have to say that it is also a sport. And, i am not sure how one would measure as to whether one sport was more of a sport than another sport.
